Two covers: A Unique Pencil Case Design

Combining Functionality and Playfulness

The Two covers pencil case stands out from other pencil cases due to its unique features. The case consists of two rubber covers connected by a rubber string, creating a uni-body design. The rubber string passes through an acrylic cylinder, allowing the case to be opened from both ends. The tension of the rubber ensures that the case closes securely, preventing any accidental spills. This design allows users to open and close the case spontaneously, making it more convenient than traditional pencil cases.

Additionally, the Two covers pencil case offers an additional function. Users can hang the rubber covers on a small groove on the cylinder, allowing for easy access to their pencils while working at a desk.

The realization of this design involves injection molding for the rubber parts and extrusion acrylic for the case. The surfaces of the case have a matte texture, providing a comfortable grip. The case can be made from various materials such as plastic, aluminum, or wood, offering customization options for users.

The specifications of the Two covers pencil case are as follows: the case measures 180 x 50 mm, and the rubber covers measure 170 x 50 mm.

Designed with the aim of improving people's lives and interactions with everyday objects, the Two covers pencil case offers a practical and playful solution for storing pencils. The project was completed over a four-month period, from September to December, at ECAL (ECAL/Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne).

Dong-Kyun Lim faced several challenges during the design process, particularly in determining the optimal tension and hardness of the rubber parts. Through extensive testing with different rubber materials and lengths, the designer achieved the perfect balance to ensure the case opens and closes smoothly without any inconvenience.

The Two covers pencil case is not only a functional and innovative design but also a winner of the prestigious A' Design Award. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Art and Stationery Supplies Design category in 2015. This award recognizes designs that meet professional and industrial requirements while integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics. The Two covers pencil case stands out for its well-designed, practical, and innovative features that contribute to a better world.
